Lilien Distinguished Research Professor of Management Science, Penn State Performance Implications of Customer Analytics: Perception vs. Reality Moorman’s (2016) Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) survey reports a near doubling in expected spending on customer analytics over the next three years. Yet, the responding CMOs report considerable skepticism about the performance implications of that spending. That skepticism contrasts with the results of several recent research studies that show a strong positive correlation between spending on customer analytics and firm performance. In this talk, I will review the work on whether or not and how spending on customer analytics results in profitable firm outcomes. I will then report on recent work done in conjunction with McKinsey & Co., using a large global sample of firms, that shows a strong positive relationship between spending on customer analytics and firm performance. The results show that top management support is critical for effective deployment of customer analytics, indicating that CMO skepticism may prove self-fulfilling: lack of top management support may indeed lead to ineffective or insufficient spending on customer analytics. Wednesday, April 19, 12:00 – 2:00 pm Zahir Balaporia Solutions Partner, FICO Optimization Libin Varghese Senior Consultant, FICO Optimization Deploying Advanced Analytics for Success Investments in analytics continue to climb. Demand for OR professionals/data scientists is strong. Growth projections of the analytics software market are strong. Both are fueled by the constant stream of books and articles on the power of analytics to turn data into dollars. But we are already hearing about how some of these investments are not generating the return organizations expected. Do we need better math? Is it the software? A shortage of unicorns, maybe? This talk will focus on deploying advanced analytics, which will explain an important reason why advanced analytics is falling short of its promised benefit. The Analytics Supply Chain metaphor will be used to help frame the issue (See recent article by Tom Davenport and Zahir Balaporia) , followed by ideas on how to address the critical issues of deploying analytical models and supporting change management to help turn data into dollars. Wednesday, March 15, 12:00 – 2:00 pm Arnie Barnett George Eastman Professor of Management Science, Professor of Statistics, MIT Sloan School of Management, Cambridge, MA The 2016 Presidential Election: A Guide to the Perplexed Operations Researcher The election of Donald Trump caused widespread shock, given the extremely-strong consensus that Hillary Clinton would win by a sizable margin in the national popular vote and by an even larger margin in the Electoral College. Pre-election polling suffered a huge share of the blame for the erroneous forecasts. But was the problem with the polls themselves, or with misconceptions about how to interpret the polling results? And can anything be done about the Electoral College, which reversed the popular-vote outcome in two of the last five elections and came exceedingly close to doing so in a third? We consider these questions, and then assess whether we are less perplexed about what happened or even more so. Read the full meeting description. Luncheon Meeting Wednesday, June 14, 12:00 – 2:00 pm Jack Levis Senior Director of Industrial Engineering at UPS "UPS ORION Project” (Winner of the INFORMS 2016 Franz Edelman Prize) The Road to Optimization - Lessons Learned and Best Practices  “Through the marriage of technology, information, and analytics UPS reduces cost and improves services. These advanced technologies streamline our business processes and ultimately benefit our customers.” Turning data into a business advantage through optimization is the goal of most organizations. The ever growing availability of data, along with expanding computing power and tools, opens the door to businesses gaining competitive advantage through analytical processes and skill. UPS won the 2016 Franz Edelman prize for its On Road Integrated Optimization and Navigation system (ORION). ORION is reducing 100 million miles driven annually and saving UPS $300 to $400 million each year. Jack Levis, senior director of Industrial Engineering at UPS was the program manager for ORION. He will share his experiences in designing, developing, and deploying this game changing tool. The path was fraught with pitfalls, and its success was due to the team overcoming many hard fought challenges. This presentation will outline many of those challenges well as lessons learned from the journey. Jack will highlight best practices so that other projects have a smoother path.
